It is better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward… old Chinese proverb
Where do you stand on this issue? Do we really have to make a choice?
I don’t think so.
For me, a good life, one that brings joy and satisfaction, requires all kinds of steps–or choices. Some are done consciously, some unconsciously, some are big, some small. They all take us further on our journey.
Sometimes life requires huge leaps of faith, like deciding to get married or change careers in mid-life. Sometimes all that is required is a small step, perhaps a slight change in our daily routine, that simplifies our life.
Both are valid.
I called this blog “The Manageable Life” partly in reaction to some of the blogs I read that endorse only “bold changes” or suggest that “abandoning everything” is the only way to to move forward.
For most of us, that’s not going to work. We have family obligations, financial constraints, and other stuff going on. We don’t have the luxury of just “checking out.”
But that doesn’t mean we can’t take steps–big and small–to help us get closer to our definition of a better life.
What matters is that we make a conscious decision, today, to examine what we want–and don’t want. Then take steps, whatever size needed, to make it happen.
