Most advice about routines assumes one thing:
that you wake up every day with the same energy, focus, and motivation.
But real life isn’t built like that.
Some days you’re clear-headed and capable.
Other days you’re just trying to move through the hours without unraveling.
Traditional routines don’t account for this.
The problem with rigid routines
Rigid routines are designed for ideal conditions:
- uninterrupted mornings
- stable energy
- predictable schedules
- a version of you that doesn’t get tired, overwhelmed, or emotionally full
Miss a day.
Break the streak.
Fall behind once.
And suddenly the routine feels heavy. So you abandon it altogether.
Not because you lack willpower, but because the routine didn’t bend when life did.
A softer definition of “routine”
A sustainable routine isn’t a strict sequence of tasks.
It’s a default rhythm you return to when things feel heavy.
Something you can do:
- on low-energy days
- during busy weeks
- when motivation is thin
- without needing a “reset” every time you slip
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s continuity without pressure.
Start with the minimum viable version
Instead of asking, “What’s the ideal routine?”
ask, “What’s the smallest version of this I can keep showing up for?”
Not:
- a full morning routine
But:
- opening the curtains
If the routine only works on your best days, it’s not sustainable.
If it works on your tired days, it has a chance to last.
Build routines that scale up
A softer routine has layers.
On low-energy days, you do the base layer.
On better days, you add more without changing the core.
For example:
- Base: drink water
- Extra: make tea
- Optional: sit quietly for five minutes
This way, the routine never breaks.
It simply expands or contracts based on what you have.
You don’t need a routine that looks good from the outside.
You need one that feels possible from the inside.
Here what you can actually do
If you’re rebuilding a routine, start with the easiest version
the one made of activities that are almost non-negotiable.
When I restarted mine, it looked like this:
- Open the curtains
- Brush my teeth
That was it.
After a draining phase of life, this was genuinely all I could manage.
And I finally accepted that it was enough.
Once this became consistent, I layered it:
- Open the curtains and make the bed
- Brush my teeth and hydrate
- Do slow, intentional stretches
- Clean my workspace
And then, slowly, more followed.
Routines don’t need to be ideal.
They need to flow like habits.

They fail because they’re built without room for being human.
A softer routine doesn’t demand your best every day.
